During the week of July 9-15, 2012, Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for drunken driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

During the week of July 9-15, 2012, Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for drunken driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; Puna, 4; Hilo, 2; and South Kohala, 1.

So far this year, there have been 745 DUI arrests compared to 722 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.5 percent.

There have been 785 major accidents so far this year compared to 734 during the same period last year, an increase of 6.9 percent.

So far this year, there have been 19 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared to 12 during the same period last year, an increase of 58.3 percent.

Police say that, to date 11 of the fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: six to drugs; three to alcohol; and two, a combination of both.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
